SPOTTING TIPS
There are some important things that you can do to keep your carpets looking good between professional carpet cleaning times. This is important if you want your carpets to last. Here are some helpful hints:

  1. Vacuum at least twice a week. More in very heavy traffic areas.
  2. Clean up any spills and spots as soon as possible.
  3. Professionally deep clean every 12 months to 18 months.

It is also important to stop dirt at the door!

  1. Use mats in all the entryways.
  2. Take your shoes off at the door.
  3. Change the air filters in your heating and air conditioning units to keep the amount of dust and particles out of your house

 

HOW TO REMOVE 40 COMMON SPOTS

You will want to act quickly in removing spills because the longer the delay the better chance of staining. Here are some tips:

  1. Blot the liquids with a dry white absorbent towel. Make sure the towel is white so there is no dye transfer from the towel onto your carpet.
  2. Don’t scrub the area. This can damage the carpet fibers by unwinding them causing them to look distorted. Once the area is completely blotted dry gently scrape with a spoon any solids, then vacuum.
  3. Pretest any carpet cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area. NEVER use bleach! Pour a few drops of carpet cleaning solution to a hidden area and hold a white towel over it for about ten seconds. Examine both the towel and the carpet to see if there is any dye transfer, color change or damage.
  4. Once testing is done to your satisfaction, apply a small amount of carpet cleaning solution to the affected area. Work it in gently taking care to not scrub. Work your way from the edges of the spot inward so as not to spread the area out further. Continue to blot and remove as much as possible. Repeat if necessary until there is no longer any color transfer from the spot onto the white towel.
  5. Once the spill has been completely removed rinse the entire area thoroughly with cold water and blot dry with a clean white towel. Be sure to completely rinse the affected area so that rapid re-soiling does not occur. Thoroughly dry the area by blotting with dry white towels.

SPOTTING SOLUTIONS TO KEEP ON HAND

  1. AMMONIA SOLUTION – Mix one tablespoon of clean household ammonia with one full cup of water.
  2. DETERGENT SOLUTION – Mix one teaspoon of liquid detergent (clear Ivory Liquid) to one quart lukewarm water.
  3. DRY CLEANING SOLVENT – A dry cleaning fluid, nonvolatile solvent. Follow safety precautions printed on dry cleaning fluids. NEVER use gasoline, lighter fluid, or carbon tetrachloride. Always apply solvent with white absorbent towel- never apply solvent directly to spot. If dry cleaning was the only solution used, allow the carpet to dry naturally- don’t add water.
  4. ENZYME DIGESTER – Purchase at pet store supply and follow directions on container, or contact professional cleaner.

 

SPOTTING GUIDE

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES/BEER:

  1. Blot up as much as possible if still wet.
  2. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  3. Apply vinegar solution, blot.

ANIMAL/HUMAN FECES:

  1. VINEGAR SOLUTION – Mix one-third cup of white household vinegar with two-thirds cup of water.
  2. Remove as much as possible.
  3. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  4. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with water, blot until dry.

ANIMAL/HUMAN URINE:

  1. Blot up as much as possible if still wet.
  2. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  3. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  4. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with water, blot until dry.

ASHES/SOOT:

  1. Dry vacuum with canister hose to remove as much as possible.
  2. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  3. Apply dry cleaning solvent to towel, then apply to carpet. Blot until dry.

BLOOD:

  1. Apply cool detergent solution, blot.
  2. Apply cool ammonia solution, blot.
  3. Apply enzyme digester, blot.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with water, blot until dry.

BUTTER/GRAVY/MARGARINE/SALAD DRESSING:

  1. Apply detergent solution, blot until dry.
  2. Apply dry cleaning solvent to towel then apply to spot, blot.
  3. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  4. Rinse with water, blot until dry.

CANDLE WAX:

  1. Apply white cotton towel or paper over wax and carefully iron.
  2. Remove towel as wax is absorbed.
  3. Remove any remaining residue with dry cleaning solvent.

CATSUP/TOMATO SAUCE:

  1. Apply cool detergent solution, blot.
  2. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  3. Apply enzyme digester, blot.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with water, blot dry.

CHOCOLATE:

  1. Scrape off as much as possible with a spatula or dull knife.
  2. Apply cool detergent solution, blot.
  3. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  4. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  5. Apply enzyme digester, blot.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with water and blot dry.

COFFEE/TEA:

  1. Apply detergent solution, blotting frequently.
  2. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  3. Weigh down with dry towels until dry.

CRAYONS:

  1. Apply dry cleaning solvent to towel then apply to carpet, blot.
  2. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  3. Rinse with water, blot until dry.

FOOD COLORING:

  1. Apply detergent solution, blotting frequently. Repeat until color is no longer transferred to towel.
  2. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with water, blot until dry.

FURNITURE STAIN:

  1. Apply dry cleaning solvent to towel and then apply to affected areas, blot.
  2. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  3. Rinse with water, blot until dry.
  4. This spot is almost impossible to completely remove. Contact your professional carpet cleaner for assistance.

GRASS:

  1. Apply enzyme digester, blot.
  2. Rinse with water, blot.
  3. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  4. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  5. Rinse with water, blot dry.

INK:

  1. Apply dry cleaning solvent to towel, blot.
  2. Continue to rotate the towel. Repeat as necessary.

JAM/JELLY:

  1. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  2. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  3. Rinse with water, blot.
  4. Apply enzyme digester, blot.
  5. Rinse with water, blot until dry.

LIPSTICK:

  1. Carefully scrape off excess with dull knife.
  2. Apply dry cleaning solvent to towel, then to affected areas, blot. Repeat twice.
  3. Apply detergent, blot.
  4. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  5. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  6. Rinse with water, blot until dry.

MILDEW:

  1. Apply enzyme digester, blot.
  2. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with water, blot until dry.
  4. Contact your professional carpet cleaner for anti-microbial.

MUD:

  1. Allow to dry completely.
  2. Brush or scrape off as much as possible and vacuum.
  3. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  4. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with water, blot until dry.

MUSTARD:

  1. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  2. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  3. Apply enzyme digester, blot.
  4. Do not use ammonia or alkalies.

NAIL POLISH:

  1. PRETEST FIRST!!
  2. Apply nail polish remover, blot.
  3. Apply dry cleaning solvent to towel then to affected areas, blot.
  4. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  5. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with water, blot until dry.

PAINT:

  1. REMOVE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, COVER WITH A WET TOWEL. CONTACT YOUR CARPET CLEANING PROFESSIONAL IMMEDIATELY.

POTTING SOIL:

  1. Let dry overnight.
  2. Vacuum carefully with canister hose.
  3. Use water and detergent on any residual soil.

PROTIEN FOODS (EGGS/MILK):

  1. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  2. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  3. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  4. Rinse with water, blot until dry.

SHOE POLISH:

  1. Contact your professional carpet cleaner for assistance.

SOFT DRINKS/FRUIT/FRUIT JUICE:

  1. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  2. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  3. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  4. Rinse with water, blot until dry.

SUGAR FOODS: SYRUP/HONEY/CANDY:

  1. Apply hot detergent solution, blot.
  2. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  3. Rinse with water, blot until dry.

TAR/GREASE:

  1. Apply dry cleaning solvent to towel, then to carpet, blot.
  2. Repeat as necessary.

VOMIT:

  1. Remove as much as possible.
  2. Apply enzyme digester, blot.
  3. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  4. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  5. Rinse with water, blot until dry.

WINE:

  1. Apply detergent solution, blot.
  2. Apply vinegar solution, blot.
  3. Apply ammonia solution, blot.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with water, blot until dry.
